Hi there! Welcome to Scrolls of Eshathar- or SoE, for short. I'm Trippy, the owner/creator of the board. There's a few things you should know up front, that can help make it easier to get started here. :-)
First of all, it's cool if you just want to lurk. Seriously. We don't mind lurkers. If you want to spice things up, but don't feel like playing a character, that's cool too. There's all sorts of contributed content sections, none of which require you to play a character. If you've never played a Forum-style RPG, don't worry. The Staff is happy to help new players get a feel for things. If you ever have any questions, feel free to ask.
SoE has a couple unique features- namely, the Contributed Content section and the Colosseum. The Contributed Content section represents all the stuff that members have added to the game: spells, weapons, potions, war machines, etc. This serves two key purposes- it lets everyone participate here on SoE without needing to have a character if they don't want one, and it also keeps things fair by letting everyone know what is allowed and what isn't. It's a little slice of Democracy, in a way.
The Colosseum is a whole separate game. It's for veteran role-players only, and it has a unique set of requirements and conduct. It also has a combat system unlike any other RP board out there, and will really test the writing ability of anyone who wants to play there. If you would like to enter, please read the Boot Camp section first, as it contains all the details of the Colosseum's combat system.
I know it seems like there's TONS of rules, but there aren't that many, really. A lot of it is common sense- like no posting smut, and no being a jerk to other players. This place is supposed to be a fun way to stretch your creative muscles, after all.
The rules and templates in the Contributed Content section are just there to provide a standard, so that everybody knows what to include when they add a new potion, skill, or armament.
There's also different "levels" of play if you do have a character. Everyone is welcome in the General RP area- this is the main part of the game. There's not a lot of restrictions, so if you're new to RP boards, you can get the hang of how to play. It also helps to discuss ideas for stories or plot twists with other members in the Plots and Schemes board.
The Epic board introduces neat little plot devices and a few restrictions, but that's only to offer a little more of a challenge. You may meet some of the Legend NPCs there, and some pretty big things will happen. Since Epics are a little more complex, everyone who wants to play in an Epic will have to join in the discussion in the Plots and Schemes topic for it.
The Colosseum is pretty complicated. I'd stick around and play a normal character for a while first, to get the hang of it. As I mentioned earlier, the Colosseum is one of SoE's unique features, and has its own set of special rules.
Each of these sections- General, Epic, Colosseum- are fully independent. Meaning what you do in any one of them doesn't affect the other two at all. SoE is just a little board now- we don't have a lot of people here, and I just finished cleaning out old threads and outdated stuff. But the more people who stay, the better SoE will get.
If you'd like to build a character, be sure to use the template provided. Once you've decided on a character type, the next step is to pick a race. Each race has its own strengths and weaknesses, so choose carefully. There's also some information on the history of Eshathar, up to when the game begins, and descriptions of the kingdoms vying for control. There's information about the geographical features of Eshathar, too. There's even accounts of important battles from Eshathar's history.
So come on in, look around, and maybe stay awhile. We'll be glad to have you. If you'd like to get started right away, there's some more detailed information here.
