Here's some more detailed information about your role here on SoE.
Contributor vs. Player
To begin with, being a member and being a Player are not necessarily synonymous. If you would like to simply lurk for a while, that's fine. If you don't want to have any characters, but would like to contribute to our Grimoirum or similar boards, feel free to do so, we are not going to force you into RPing. Both lurking, and contributing content without RPing, are acceptable, and members who do so are known unofficially as Contributors. HOWEVER, we do ask that you register an account with us, even if you don't plan on actually playing. As much fun as posting anonymously is, the only place it will be tolerated is in the Spam or Affiliate boards. Anywhere else and it gets deleted, no matter how incredibly badass the post was.
Moving on, step lively now! Being a Player at SoE is a lot more flexible than most boards. Please don't make a separate account for each character. That may make it much simpler to switch from one character to another, but it makes tracking a single player's contributions to the board difficult. Not to mention, it will make some aspects of the game (like the Apothecary) almost completely useless if a player is constantly switching accounts.
Pit Fighter vs. Gladiator vs. Adventurer
There are 3 types of characters here at SoE that you can play: Pit Fighters, Gladiators, and Adventurers. There's Legends too, but you cannot apply for a Legend. Legends are powerful NPC's (non-player characters), and are thus unavailable to be RP'ed by a player.
Gladiators are characters that only exist in the Colosseum. They are not approved for use anywhere else in the game, and are thus limited to the Colosseum only. Basically, a Gladiator is exactly as his namesake suggests: he exists only to fight. The Colosseum gives a Gladiator that chance, as there is no storyline or continuity in the Colosseum, only combat.
An Adventurer is a character approved for the game, but not approved (or not applied for) the Colosseum. Most characters will end up being Adventurers. This allows the character to take part in Epic RP's as well as any general RP. However, an Adventurer character cannot fight in any of the Colosseum's challenges, no matter how well-developed the character is.
A Pit Fighter is a character approved for both In-Game RPing and Colosseum-RPing. This means that a Pit Fighter can RP anywhere. Pit Fighters killed in the Colosseum are not killed in-game, and vice-versa. Colosseum challenges have no bearing whatsoever on any in-game RPs and vice-versa.
Submission Boards
Here at SoE, we don't have a panel of Almighty Admins decreeing what will or will not be allowed in-game. While our admins DO decide the RULES for play, they do not decide the CONTENT. Our wonderful members/players do that! But, in order to be fair, ALL members/players have to be aware of what content is approved...that way they will know what they can get away with. ;-)
In the CONTRIBUTED CONTENT section, you'll see 5 boards: Schematics, Grimoirum, Skillbook, Armory, and Apothecary. Each of those boards has a specific template for submitting your own original content. This is to ensure that all the original content provided by members and approved for use follows the same format and is easy for everyone to understand. Kind of like writing a file that can be read by both PCs and MACs, these templates ensure that every member understands how to use submitted content.
Whenever ANY original content is submitted, it will first be reviewed by myself or an Admin. If it is too similar to something already approved, or the template is not followed, or it is too powerful/silly/inappropriate, it will be denied. If, however, it is approved, myself or an admin will add it where it is appropriate. The application will be archived, which helps keep the Submission boards free from being cluttered up by old submits. Once added, the content is officially part of the Game, and can be used anywhere in SoE. Credit will be given where credit is due, of course, and the name of the member who contributed it will be displayed next to the invention's name. Inventions that have a "cost" in their descriptions can be used in the Colosseum, as well as the normal game.
In-Game content is permanent. Once added, it will always be available from that point on for any character to use (in accordance with Race/character restrictions). Content in the Apothecary follows a completely different set of rules...it is primarily OOC, limited in how many different members can use it, and at the discretion of myself or an admin, can expire. This isn't meant maliciously, it's supposed to add a little silly fun to SoE and reward members for all their hard work, so don't take it personal if your potion expires. ;-)
Skillbook and Armory content is tied to the combat system in the Colosseum. It is recommended that you read through the BOOT CAMP section before contributing to these boards.
IC-post Format
All posts must be written from third-person (like a narrator) in past-tense. Posts must be a minimum of two paragraphs of four sentences each. Posts containing explicit violence or sexual conduct must have an OOC warning beforehand, with three asterisks immediately before, and after the content in question.
Example:
OOC: Naughty bits!
blah blah blah normal part of post, la la la
***
thingy thingy thingy BLOOD GORE DEATH thingy BEER SEX
***
blah blah
Keep out of character to a minimum while making in-character posts. I don't want to see a blog entry before an important post.
Do not post multiple times in a row. If you make a mistake in a post, go back and Modify it rather than posting the improved version in the same thread. Also, don't post so rapidly that other people in the thread do not have time to respond...that is considered god-modding and won't be allowed.
IMPORTANT: If you apply for a character/contribute content and are asked to edit it, please modify the original post, then send me a PM. This serves to alert me to the fact that the recommended edits have been made- which both gets my attention (there's a lot to look over, so waving a hand in the air will help) and assures me that you have read the recommendations for edits.
Content
While sexual content and violent content is allowed, please refrain from going into severe, agonizing detail. I am loathe to read explicit details that would be commonly found in romance novels or zombie comics. If you absolutely MUST go into such detail, use the format mentioned above, and make sure to have a disclaimer. Keep in mind, if it crosses the boundaries of good taste, it may be deleted or modified. This is, for the most part, simply courtesy.
Restrictions
Restrictions on what can go into a post depend a lot on the character being posted as. New characters aren't going to be combat experts or ultra-powerful spellcasters, so play them accordingly.
Certain Races cannot wield magic, others cannot use advanced technology. Still others are capable of using both, but to prevent absurdly powerful characters, any player-character is limited to using either magic or high-tech gadgets, not both. If you make a character that is a hybrid of multiple races, this rule still applies. No character can be secular and arcane, PERIOD.
The only spells that can be used in a post are those that have been created, and approved, in the Grimoirum board. The only super-machines that can be used are those that have been created and approved in the Schematics board. Simple machines, like swords, plows, etc., can be used without having approval.
Characters who are arcane cannot use machines from the Schematics board, and secular characters cannot use any spells. If this rule is broken, go back and edit it out of a post, or an admin will do so for you. This rule is meant to keep things fair for everyone, as having super-characters who can do everything would be unfair to everyone else.
Legal Stuff
Everything on Eshathar is copyright its creators- meaning, if you made a spell in the Grimoirum, it's yours. Since most of the stuff on SoE was made by me, that makes the copyright mine. Scrolls of Eshathar, SoE, and the Eshathar logo are also my copyright. No stealing. Pretty simple, right?
Also, don't post copyrighted stuff. Meaning, don't post someone else's work, and claim it's yours. I'll allow character crossovers from other games, but only if the character isn't already copyrighted and you can prove it's yours. Meaning, no playing Wolverine, and no playing someone else's character on some other game.
