Character Name: Rowan Bottric
Race: Human
Age: 233
Gender: male
Place of Birth: Waeleden
Arcane or Secular: Secular
Physical Description: Rowan Bottric stands 6'2" tall, which by itself gives him a towering figure compared to other humans. His hair- where it remains- is a silvery grey, as is his beard. His right eye was once a dazzling blue, but has become clouded and opaque over the many long years of Rowan's life. Most noticeable, however, is the left side of Rowan's body- which is entirely made of metal. This construct half was once a burnished, coppery color, but over the years it has taken on a greenish, mossy appearance, as tarnish and patina set in. Rowan's body is bisected, right down the middle, from the top of his head to his legs- the metal side of his face is less well-defined than his human side, and his metal side has no wrinkles, age spots, hair, or any other sign of age save for the tarnish. His left eye, as everything else, is a construct, and can be extended or retracted from his skull like a spyglass.
Rowan's human side is not as heavily built as his construct side, giving him a lopsided appearance. His voice is a deep baritone, though it is somewhat gravelly, as he seldom speaks. His construct side often clanks or squeals as he walks, similar to an old, rusty sign swaying in the wind.
Personality: Rowan was once a gregarious and sociable man, even if he was a brigand and highwayman. He always conversed in a friendly manner with his victims, and never injured or attacked anyone unless he was attacked first. The epitome of a dashing, charming rogue. That was before Korgoth's curse bound him to metal, and before the death of his wife, before his daughter ran away, and before the full extent of his curse became known to him. Two centuries later, Rowan's mind has long since snapped, and there is little that drives him other than the never-ending search for vengeance.
Background: Rowan was born to impoverished parents, who quickly determined that they could not care for another child. He was left abandoned at a workhouse, where he stayed until he was about 14. Never one for respecting authority or following the rules, Rowan ran away, and began the dangerous life of a highwayman- he interpreted this as being far more glamorous and exciting than begging on the streets.
Rowan's brigand career was, in the main, a successful one- he was attractive enough and charming enough that few of his victims ever really tried to hurt him, and he was clever enough to outwit the ones that did. A decade of banditry gave him quite the reputation, as did his habit of shamelessly flirting with every woman who crossed his path and recklessly taunting authorities. He even occasionally assaulted entire caravans, which although dangerous, provided immense rewards from a successful raid.
One such caravan was owned by a mage named Tacamar the Unthinkable- an elf exiled from Bishal for his attempts to create artificial life. Tacamar's entire caravan was operated by these mechanical creatures- the horses, the drivers, even the hounds were all at least partially mechanized. Rowan, being reckless and impulsive, decided to attack anyway. It was a mistake.
Tacamar's artificial creations overwhelmed him, and though he managed to disable a few, he was no match for them. Rather than kill him, Tacamar used him as an experiment, to see if Terrans were capable of being grafted to a construct and yet survive. Unfortunately, Tacamar relied on magics to ensure the bonding was successful- which has the side effect of preventing Rowan from dying until his metal half is destroyed, as well.
However, Rowan Bottric was not the sort of man who appreciates being given orders. Not long after waking, he managed to kill Tacamar and escape into the forest. There he resumed his brigand's life, now greatly aided both by his metal half, and by the exotic weapons he stole from Tacamar. After another decade of banditry, Rowan found himself in a most unusual position- the caravan of clerics and monks he had intended to raid had no treasure worth taking, but had instead given him one of their monks, a woman named Meagan, as a wife.
Strangely enough, the two made quite the effective pair- Meagan disapproved of attacking any caravan they encountered, but encouraged raids on the wealthy elite or ruling vassals in the region. Though Rowan had initially been leery of her and more than once tried to lose her in the woods, he came to rely on her for her keen eyes, sharp wits, and impressive fighting style. Eventually, they fell in love, and she became pregnant. She gave birth to a daughter, Ines, who possessed her mother's bright blonde hair, and her father's brilliant blue eyes.
Rowan doted on Ines incessantly, as any loving father would. But he could not abandon the life he had led, and with more and more raids on the wealthy and the powerful men of the region, his reputation- and the bounty on his head- grew. Meagan threatened to leave him and take Ines if he did not stop, as his actions were putting them all in danger- but still, he could not. Piracy was in his very blood, it was all that he knew.
One fateful day, as Rowan was returning to the hideout from a raid, he spotted unfamiliar tracks, and smelled the lingering hint of smoke. He rushed home as fast as he could, to find that his hideout had been discovered and attacked. Ines, by now a clever and skillful acrobatic 14 year old, lay bleeding on the hearth- Meagan, the love of his life, lay dead, surrounded by nearly a dozen men-at-arms. Rowan swore revenge against whomever had robbed him of his life's love, and after making arrangements for Ines to live in cloister, he began to search for whoever was responsible for his loss.
The men-at-arms Meagan had slain bore no symbols or coat-of-arms to identify which lord they worked for, and after two centuries, the trail has long since been cold. But Rowan still wanders across Eshathar, driven mad with hate and grief, attacking anyone unlucky enough to encounter him in the futile hope of avenging his beloved wife.
Skills/Talents: Rowan has lived long enough to master a wide variety of weaponry, and prior to that his life as a highwayman taught him the skills needed to survive for the long-term on whatever the land can provide. His metal half makes him nearly invulnerable to many weapons, and also gives him resistance to the elements to some degree. He is also immortal- though not invulnerable- for as long as his metal half remains intact.
Weaknesses: Rowan is not a stealthy man- the noise his metal side makes, as well as the heavy tracks it leaves, make finding him or avoiding him much simpler.
Mary Sue Rationale: Humans are NOT immortal. Period. Also, it is impossible for any character to wield magic AND utilize technology, yet Tacamar- the mage who cursed Rowan- does both.
