Well, here we are. It's been a long and brutal eight weeks, but you made it. Take a moment to congratulate yourself, you've done a wonderful job. But the challenge has only just begun. From here, you will be putting all your training to the test, as you guide your character along its creation, and eventual destruction, in the merciless bloody arena that is the Colosseum.
I won't lie, you are going to lose a character at some point. As much as I'd like to say that it won't affect you, I've been RP'ing long enough to know that every character you make, every idea that you take out of your skull and breathe life into, becomes like a part of you...and seeing it die, alone and afraid in the Colosseum, surrounded by enemies: it's not a pleasant experience.
But experience is what the game is all about: you learn from what happens, and try to move on. The Colosseum, like SoE in general, is what you as a member make of it. I've tried to make SoE as friendly a community as possible, and if at any point you need to discuss something, in-game or out-of-game, I'm available via PM. I expect that all members be respectful to each other, to SoE staff, and to me. We aren't here to make enemies, we're not here to mercilessly attack new members or people we don't like. We're here to have fun, and that, above all else, should be the number one rule. Respectful posting, IC and OOC, takes on bold new meaning in the Colosseum, where a single mistake could cost your character his/her life. Where your actions may kill a character...you may be best friends with a player, and they may have a char they love like a son...that you end up killing. I expect all members to act with utmost civility to one another, regardless of what happens here or anywhere else on the boards.
The Colosseum won't be easy. It will start off simple, but it gets harder fast. VERY fast. The chief challenge of it is how you will take the information given to you in a RR post and verbalize it; how you, as a writer, will convert raw stats and faceless data into a living, breathing being, fighting for its survival while a crowd of thousands fills the air with their approval. The Colosseum is the ultimate challenge for any writer, and as such, I'm not going to make it easy on anyone. It's nothing personal: I'm not out to kill anybody's character. I'm out to make us all better writers, myself included. The only way to do that is to push the limits of your skill, discover the boundaries of your ability...and then push past them. We are both engaged in this incredible adventure, and my hope is that all of us emerge triumphant. Just for the record, this isn't mandatory. I'm not forcing anyone to throw their hat into the ring. If you want to try your hand at this, it is entirely your choice, and yours alone. The consequences, both good and bad, are your cross to bear.
Welcome to the Colosseum.
