Character Name: Cael Oreth
Race: Canid, Consortium Clan
Gender: Female
Place of Birth: the Old City, predecessor to Llanivaya
Arcane or Secular: Arcane
Physical Description: Cael Oreth is a Weaver, and closely resembles a great Black Widow. She has two arms and six legs, although only her legs have an exoskeleton. Her arms are covered in a velvety textured black fur, while her legs are covered in jet black exoskeletal plates. Her hair is slightly below shoulder-length, slightly curly, and a silvery mauve color. Her abdomen is not as bulbous as most Spider kin's, and due to her age, she can no longer spin silk, leaving her spinnerets small, withered, vestigial appendages, barely noticeable on her behind.
She has a much less arachnid face than much of her kind, with only two eyes and a single mouth, made from paired lips. Facially, she could pass for a human, and in her youth, was strikingly beautiful. Now, her face is creased and wrinkled, and her eyes have become slightly milky. Her lips, while still cherry-hued, have sagged and withered, and can no longer fully conceal the single pair of pearly fangs within her mouth. These two fangs are the only teeth she still has, the rest having fallen out over the long years of her life.
Personality: Cael Oreth (or simply Oreth) is the oldest living Canid, and despite her kinds tendency for seclusion, for a brief time, she was a well-known, and popular, figure in Llanivaya's early days. Stained glass likenesses in the Councillate Hall and a marble statue in the Statuary Garden show her at the height of her youth and beauty, and the name Oreth is a popular one for females of all breeds, not just Weavers, all over the city and the forest below it.
Now, Oreth is seldom seen outside the lightning-struck hollow tree she lives in. Rarer still will she converse with anyone, though those who have seen her are quick to point out the lack of 'life' in her, as if she were constantly on death's door. Given her age, acting in such a manner would hardly be surprising. A brief inquiry nearly a decade ago as to her suspected involvement in a raid on a Terran caravan was the last time she was seen in public. Philanthropic Canids will on occasion stop by her hollow with care packages of serum, clothing, and other supplies, but aside from that, she has no contact with anyone.
Background: Cael Oreth was one of the many Weavers who helped construct the Canid capital of Llanivaya. Her silk, and the silk of many others, was used to create the enormous anchor-lines that literally tie the city down, like a tether, to the forest floor. As such, her efforts were highly appreciated, and Oreth found herself rather popular, for a Weaver. Her appearance, which had earned her a great deal of teasing from other Weavers, was now a source of a great deal of attention, and more than a few admirers. All the attention was flattering to say the least. Oreth found herself not just having suitors, but having so many, that she had to turn away several young men on a daily basis. When a striking young wolf named Alstor began courting her, Oreth became something of a celebrity. She was given the 'Cael' honorific, for her role is securing the city to the forest. Many other Weavers were upset at this, as they were not bestowed any titles or honors.
Oreth, now known as Cael Oreth, had already been a noteworthy apothecary, but now found herself to be considered an expert, if not the expert, in her field. Her romantic involvement with Alstor had almost no impact on her popularity, and at one point, was even considered an important step in more fully integrating Weavers into the society. Over their time together, Alstor became Judicator, and not long after, they were wed. They could not bear children, as Weaver physiology is still too different to allow them to conceive with other Breeds, but Alstor and Oreth were still very much in love...in a careful, refined, and dignified manner.
The Canid kingdom was still fairly new at this point, and occasionally had to deal with inter-species squabbles alongside the problems of a new nation. One problem that was overlooked, simply because Weavers did not live in the city, was the vampiric thirst all Weavers shared. Since Cael Oreth was the only Weaver to live in the city, or to have any sort of social interaction with other Breeds, nobody had made any effort to 'cure' the Weavers of this condition. Truth be told, very few Canids even knew the condition existed.
With the ever-present and all-consuming need to feed on the blood of other living creatures slowly driving her to madness, Oreth became shy and reclusive. Unable to descend to the forest to hunt due to her enormous popularity, Cael Oreth was forced to have others hunt for her, taking extra care to bring her prey alive. Eventually, this technique grew less effective, as it was impossible to bring the large game she truly needed to feed on up to the city without killing it. Cael Oreth became very shy and reclusive, closing her apothecary and seldom leaving the home she shared with her husband. Alstor, noticing the change in his beloved, tried to help as best he could. He bravely let her feed on him, just enough to keep her sane, while he passed a motion in the Council to find, or develop, a cure. Other Canids, who had become fond of Oreth, were quick to her aid. Within a year, a synthetic serum was devised, and thanks to Alstor's efforts in Council, a law was passed that all Weavers would be supplied with the serum as needed.
But by the time the serum had been manufactured, and the law requiring its use and distribution passed, Oreth's mind had been all but destroyed by the thirst. The initial attempts at the serum offered to her had only worsened her condition. The perfected serum, though effective on other Weavers, was not potent enough to reverse her long years of suffering. When Alstor again selflessly offered his own vitae to her, she lost control, and drained him dry.
Overcome with grief, Oreth fled the city, taking Alstor's body with her. She tightly bound him in her own silks, preserving his likeness like a statue. The Canid government tried to give her additional supplies of the serum, and offered her amnesty for the accidental death of their Judicator, but Oreth refused, thinking that the Council was trying to poison her as vengeance for murdering Alstor.
Skills/Talents: Oreth is an excellent historian and a potent healer. She can bind wounds, cure diseases, and create an antidote for nearly any toxin. Though she cannot produce her own silk anymore, she can still weave the silk or cloth of others, and does so often out of habit. She has kept with her detailed accounts of Llanivaya's construction, as well as the tumultuous period leading up to it. Oreth is also able to determine the parentage of a child, by tasting the blood of the child as well as the blood of the supposed parents. Before the madness completely consumed her, Oreth would provide this talent of hers as a service to young males accused of fathering illegitimate children.
Weaknesses: Oreth is a heartbroken old spinster, and clings to the hope of reviving her fallen lover with a fanatic desperation. Also, like all other Weavers, Oreth has the vampiric thirst...but due partly to her isolation and partly to her intense suspicion of the Canid government, is not supplied with the synthetic substitute that other Weavers receive from the Canid government. Thus, she must hunt for her prey or lure it to her.
Mary Sue Rationale: Canids are supposed to be short-lived, for one. And the "heartbroken old spinster living all alone" cliche is pretty obvious.
