Character Name: Kallias ‘Kal’ Galanis
Race: Elf
Age: Twenty-two
Gender: Male
Place of Birth: Acacia City
Arcane: Yes
Physical Description: Kallias has always been, much to his chagrin, a lot shorter than most elves that usually tower over other races. He barely manages to scrape 5’3”, somewhat odd considering both his parents were considered tall even by elf standards. He has a thin, wiry frame without much substance to it. Kallias has what is commonly referred to as a scholar’s complexion. He breaks the stereotype slightly by having a light tan, brought about by walking outside from place to place. But there’s no denying the fact he’s commonly found deep into a book or casting magic from a distance. Not two of the most muscle building activities upon Eshathar. It also doesn’t help that his eating habits are somewhat irregular; usually depending upon how much money he’s recently made on a job.
He has long hair, about a few inches past shoulder length. Kallias usually binds this with a few inches of leather to keep it out of his face and from causing distractions. Despite not having a steady income, he usually tries to avoid a shabby appearance and tries to take good care of both his hair and body, usually meeting with some mixed success. Traveling on the road isn’t the best place to do such things, after all. When the elf does let down his hair, which isn’t really often…during sleep and a few other occasions only, it seems to look perpetually wavy, like he walked upward through a strong wind blowing the opposite direction for a while, giving it that special look. His hair is a few shades darker then light brown, but not enough to resemble black. Instead, it’s right in between the two.
Both of his ears gently slope upwards until they end in a point. This is probably the most tell-tale sign he’s an elf, since there usually displayed when Kallias has his hair pulled back. An observant individual might note that each of his irises is slightly curved and a sharp, almost freaky luminous brown color. Under light, usually the sun, that hue appears almost flecked with gold. This is a strange hue, even among elves.
Usually, in normal conditions, Kallias dresses no better than a commoner might, not like you might expect from an elf with a good deal of magical power. Perhaps a simple pair of comfortable breeches and an accompanying tunic.
Personality: Even though he’s not the most active person in all of Eshathar, Kallias does have two personality traits that eventually led him from leaving Acacia City. He’s extremely curious and has always had a thirst for adventure. The elf loves seeing new places and meeting interesting people. Kallias isn’t exactly independent, and can rely on other people if need be, but if possible he’ll attempt to do something first by himself before requesting someone else’s help. Kallias relies heavily on magic, and doing that tempered his harsh feelings against letting anyone else aid him long ago.
One particular thing Kallias never really solved is sometimes he can be hopelessly clumsy. He’s tripped during spells which require complicated movements dozens of times. However things always seem to work out good for him, like an act of clumsiness is followed by something extremely lucky happening. It’s inexplicably odd. He’s not a miser, and doesn’t mind spending what money he has upon a comfort. Usually in a town he ends up purchasing a few new tomes, only to later sell them at another town to get enough gold (Gold? =/) to keep the cycle going and buy new ones. His memory is pretty good, and he can recall facts from almost anything he’s ever read.
Kallias can be loyal to someone or something if need be, but he immensely likes moving from place to place as something of a drifter. He has an easy going personality, but usually doesn’t stay anywhere long. As such Kallias can tend to be slightly socially deprived. Not up to date on current events or stumbling around words when he needs to talk to other people extensively.
Background: Kallias started seriously studying the arcane at a young age, in addition to his normal education received from paid tutors. Both of his parents had amassed a small fortune in there business, and they could basically afford some of the best. Living forever off there success, however, wasn’t something that appealed to Kallias, which eventually led to his leaving Acacia City some years later. Kallias generally led a boring life from that point on; often he was forced to seek some sort of adventure in the city and surrounding land. That also helped him meet and interact with a variety of different people which first interested Kallias in various languages, which he’s been personally studying for some time.
Finally, after turning sixteen, still practically an infant considering the life span of elves; Kallias simply couldn’t take that kind of life anymore. He ran away from the general comforts his previous life offered, and doesn’t even venture near Acacia City anymore if he can help it. Using what magic he’d learned so far, and continuing to further study while traveling, Kallias managed to carve out a living helping other people. Usually human farmers who had no access to advanced technology and were looking for an easy solution. About a year later, he made the mistake of helping a besieged town fend off some bandits. Kallias nearly got killed in the effort, and was almost sold into slavery. After escaping soon afterward, and managing to seriously damage the bandits in the process, he was hooked. Despite the dangers, the adventure had been an awesome experience.
From then on Kallias started using his magic almost like a mercenary, though having great fun sometimes he might turn down offered money. Other times he took it only out of necessity to keep traveling and continue his studies. After a few very close defeats he attempted learning staff fighting, but quickly gave it up as a lost cause. Still, Kallias does still know some of the basics. Slowly, learning only choice spells, he’s created a rather impressive arsenal which compliments one another with an equal number of both offensive and defensive spells. Of course, certain ones Kallias particularly likes and re-uses regularly.
The thing which separates Kallias from a mercenary, however, is he will still help a person even if no money is involved. He also can’t be easily bought for something which Kallias believes is wrong, no matter what’s at stake.
Skills/Talents: Kallias carries absolutely no weapon with him, and isn’t really proficient with any of them. Well, no weapon except magic. Unlike any uninformed observer might guess, though, he’s defiantly not what you’d call a pacifist. Instead, he uses the arcane for both offensive and defensive purposes. But despite this Kallias usually won’t kill, or even injure any living thing for that matter, unless forced into battle. Despite his young age, he is extremely adept at many various spells, even those that are technically above the elf’s skill level. In this case looks would defiantly be misleading. Perhaps even more important is Kallias can be very creative at times. Bending an arcane spell in new ways then traditionally used to achieve a certain goal easier, for instance.
Even though that same uninformed observer might describe Kallias as slightly impatient, and he can be at times, when it comes to magic he has an extremely good, almost photographic, memory. You wouldn’t ever find him casting two spells which act against each other, (i.e. shackles made of ice, followed by a fireball) or re-using one that’s proved ineffectual against an enemy/object before. Kallias isn’t particularly slated to a preference among offensive and defensive spells; rather he uses an equal combination of them to easily assault enemies while being protected from any return attack. This has always worked best for him.
He is also something of a scholar at heart, and is proficient in the reading and writing of quite a few various languages. That being said Kallias has an odd pool of knowledge, sometimes being knowledgeable on some of the most random, obscure topics ever. Concerning enchanted objects he is aware of little more than a book’s general description, never studying them in depth or bothering to try and create one of his own. Kallias could, perhaps, sense if any person/thing has a strong arcane pull but specifics are hard to pin down.
Kallias is the kind of person who loves challenges and best yet he’s good at them. Even under the metaphorical gun he can coolly apply logic to almost anything. It’s a certain skill of his, being able to tune out everything else going on and concentrate wholly upon something. He’s also slowly become a fairly good cook, combining a few choice spells with his culinary skills. If forced to do battle without using magic, Kallias can use a staff, and has done so before in the past. He’s not very skilled, however, and doesn’t carry one with him. Perhaps after a little practice, maybe he could get slightly better.
Weaknesses: Kallias cannot use human technology, but he has occasionally studied how certain machines operate. When faced with one, though, that information may not prove useful. He also isn’t good in a fight when magic isn’t involved. Practically hopeless with most weapons, with the possible exception of the staff, he would prove a hindrance. Kallias is also weak during social situations, occasionally losing his train of thought or stammering during long conversations with the same person.
