This is it- the last week of training. Compared to everything else, this week is going to be pretty straightforward. We're going to deal with Wealth.
Wealth is the currency in the Colosseum. You can use Wealth to buy goods at the Armory, or to surrender from battle. Paying more than the purchase price of an item- or "leaving a tip"- can get you positive Karma, while keeping Wealth without spending it will earn you more Glory in battle.
There's no such thing as "credit" here- meaning, if you don't have the Wealth necessary to buy something, too bad. You can't have negative Wealth.
Getting Rich:Wealth is one of the categories in the character creation table, and basically serves as the money of the Colosseum. You can use Wealth to pay for items from the Armory, or to repair special equipment. Aside from the initial Wealth you get when you create a character, there are two ways to earn Wealth:
Trade - This is how you'll earn the majority of your Wealth. Since there's already two types of rewards for fighting- Honor and Glory- you won't get any Wealth from fighting. You will, however, get loot: items, weapons, stuff like that. Look up the item in the Armory to see how much Wealth you get for selling it, PM the Staff, and ka-ching! Wealth!
Selling Honor - Honor is one of the types of Renown you earn from fighting- specifically, it's the one you get a set amount of, based on how many Actions you perform. Trade in 10 Honor, and you'll get 1 Wealth.
Remember earlier, when we discussed Honor and Glory? Keep in mind, more Wealth means more Glory at the end of a battle, but you'll spend more Honor than the Glory you'd get at the end. So if you trade in all your Honor in an attempt to get rich and earn more Glory, it doesn't quite work that way. Trading in 10 Honor gets you 1 Wealth- which, in turn, gets you 1 Glory after the battle. Think carefully before trading Honor for Wealth.
Going broke: Just as there are ways to earn more Wealth, there are ways to lose it, too. Aside from making purchases, there are two ways to lose Wealth:
Negative Karma - Negative Karma is bad in many ways. In addition to losing rolls as described earlier in the course, each point of negative Karma will drain 1 Wealth from your character after the battle ends. If you have a -2 Karma, you lose 2 Wealth. Note that positive Karma does not make you gain Wealth- it only goes one way.
Surrender - Any character can surrender at any time in battle, provided they haven't already been killed- even unconscious or Stunned characters can surrender. Surrendering removes your character from the battle completely, and negates any damage to your character or their equipment sustained in battle, but does not negate any Renown earned. To surrender, a character must pay half their Wealth (rounded up).
If a character has 0 Wealth, they may still surrender- but it will cost them -3 Karma. It would be a good idea for new characters to keep some Wealth, just in case they need to surrender.
Money and Death: Dying is inevitable when playing in the Colosseum. It'll happen sooner or later- but it isn't quite the end. When your character dies, it loses all its equipment and all its renown- but only half its Wealth. That Wealth can be given to any other character- even another one you create- that has the same Karma as the dead character.
There's a catch, however. This doesn't always work. If your character's Karma is greater than its WIS, you can still give away Wealth. If its WIS was equal to- or greater than- its Karma, you can't. Also, since all Atttributes must have at least 1 point, any negative Karma will prevent you from giving away Wealth.
Of course, you don't have to die to give away Wealth- there's no limit to transferring Wealth between living characters, provided their players approve- so if you want to transfer Wealth between two of your own characters, that's perfectly fine.
