Fall in, Private! Glad you could make it this week, because we got a LOT of ground to cover! First of all, there are two types of Skills. To keep things simple, they are called Good skills, and Bad skills.
Good skills help you in some way or another, and you must pay for them in Skill points (which you selected from the Character Creation Table), Renown (which is your Honor and Glory points added together), Honor points, and/or Glory points. Not all skills can be purchased with all points, not all skills are available to starting characters, and some skills have specific point costs.
Bad skills, on the other hand, give you Skill points, but do bad things or hinder your character in some way. Bad skills can be 'unlearned' by paying the Requiem Cost listed under the skill exactly as stated! If it takes 5 Glory and 10 Karma and stripping down to your skivvies, you must pay the 5 Glory, lose 10 Karma, and strip down to your skivvies! Why, you ask, would anybody want Bad skills? Because, Private, Bad skills give you a LOT of Skill points, which can be used to buy really expensive Good skills!
I hope you wrote down how many Skill points you had from the Character Creation Table, Private! Keep in mind, not all skills are available to starting characters! All Skills will have their costs listed by the point-type required to buy them: 'S' for Skill Points, 'R' for Renown Points, 'H' for Honor Points, or 'G' for Glory Points. Here's an example:
This skill is available to starters, since it's cost of 1 Skill point is something even a super-new char can afford. You can also purchase it using 5 points of Renown...that price can be either Honor or Glory...but you must specify the number of Honor, Glory, or both you wish to spend (if you want to spend 4 Honor and 1 Glory, you must specify so). If you don't specify how you will buy a Skill, you don't get to buy it. Another Skill example:
This skill is not available to starting characters. Why? Look at the Character Creation Table again, Private. Do you see 20 anywhere in the Skills column? Didn't think so! To get this skill, you need to spend 70 Glory points on it (you cannot buy it with Renown or Honor, since it has a 0 next to both Renown and Honor), AND take enough Bad skills to give you the 20 Skill points you need.
That's it for the basics on Skills, Private! In the Skillbook board, you will find all the current Skills in the game. If you have an idea for a skill, PM me, and if I like it, we'll hammer out an appropriate cost and add it in. Just like the Tome of Technology, Grimoirum, Armory, and Apothecary, you cannot use any Skill in-game unless it exists there first! Don't try using a skill in a post and applying for it afterward!
There is no limit on how many Good Skills you can have at once. Provided you have paid for all of them, they're yours to keep. Make sure to write 'em down on your bio as well as what they do, because I'm not going to keep track of them for you. If you buy a skill but forget to add it to your bio, your character does NOT have it, and you can't use it!
Bad skills have a limit of 2 maximum. Meaning if you take two bad skills, you cannot take any more until you pay the Requiem cost of one or both of the Bad skills you have already. Requiem costs, once paid, delete the Bad skill completely. for example:
So, we can see that each Bad skill gives you a number of Skill points once you take it. They do not give you Skill points whenever they are used...they are in effect all the time but only give you the Skill points when you take them. Think carefully about how a Bad skill could hurt you before you take it, as it stays with you constantly until you pay the Requiem cost. For example:
See how that works, Private? All Bad skills have a Requiem cost, which will be displayed underneath the Skill in its description. Since Bad skills can make you pay anything, they have no abbreviations, like Good skills do. You can only buy Good skills with Skill, Renown, Honor, or Glory. You can simply have Bad skills, up to two at a time, without buying them. See, ain't that nice of me, Private? Giving you two skills, for free! Of course, you have to pay me to take 'em back.
So, now that you got the jist of it, let's move on to the Skill descriptions, themselves. Good skills look like this:
Bad skills, on the other hand, look like this:
Skills are located, along with everything else that members can contribute to, in the Member Contributions section of the main game, under Skillbook (How ever do we come up with these names, eh? ^_^). Each Skill is a separate post, so it's up to you to carefully read them and make sure you pay the cost for Good Skills and/or don't go over the limit of 2 on Bad skills. As always, if you have any questions about any Skill, or would like to add one of your own to the game, see the Skillbook itself for detailed instructions, or PM me your questions. I'm not going to carefully regulate every Gladiator, but if a discrepancy is found, the Skill/Attribute/Equipment/Whatever in question will simply be deleted- the first time. The second, you have to take the skill Dirty Cheater. Third time, your char is deleted. Period.
Now, get to work, Private, you have a lot of studying to do!

Lich Lord's Rotting Touch: Your touch is so corrosive, it can reduce the effectiveness of armor, or even melt clothing. For every Action you spend holding on to something (including someone else's armor), reduce that item's Material Rating by 1. This change lasts until you are Stunned, knocked unconscious, or killed.

Billy takes the Bad skill "Homie", which deals 1 damage to Billy whenever he says 'homie' in a post. Taking this skill gives him +2 Skill points. He also takes the Bad skill "Blabbermouth", which makes him repeat the last word spoken to him. That one gives him +3 Skill points. He now has a total of +5 Skill points, which he can use to buy Good skills.
Billy wants to take the Bad skill "St00pid", which will give him -2 Wisdom. Taking "St00pid" will give him +5 Skill points. But he can't, unless he pays the Requiem cost for Homie, Blabbermouth, or both. Blabbermouth has a Requiem cost of 3 Renown. Billy has 3 Honor and 1 Glory, and decides to use 3 Honor to pay Blabbermouth's Requiem cost. He can now take St00pid as a Bad skill, giving him a total of +10 Skill points, and since Blabbermouth's Requiem cost was paid, he no longer has to repeat the last word spoken to him.
See how that works, Private? All Bad skills have a Requiem cost, which will be displayed underneath the Skill in its description.
