REVEILLE, PRIVATE! UP AND AT 'EM!
Last week we went over Attributes. This week, it's Hit Points, Honor points, and Glory points. Pay attention, as Hit Points determine if you live or die, and Honor/Glory determine what sort of goodies you get for winning.
Hit Points and Stamina
Every point in Stamina gives you 3 HP. If you ever boost your Stamina, through a weapon, piece of armor, spell, potion, or leveling up, you get another 3 HP for every point increase in Stamina. On the other hand, if your Stamina ever goes down due to a spell, weapon effect, potion, or whatever, you lose 3 HP. Pretty simple so far, right? Don't worry, it's about to get harder.
Whenever you take damage for any reason, you lose 1 HP for every 1 damage you take. This HP loss isn't permanent, you can heal HP lost through damage. HP lost as a result of lowered Stamina can't be healed. More importantly, if you ever take an amount of damage sufficient to bring your HP to 0, you lose consciousness. If you take enough damage to reduce your HP to a -10 (ten below zero) you die. That's right Private, none of that gettin' yer permission to get killed off. It's out of your hands!
But that's not all. If you ever take an amount of damage equal to, or more than, your Stamina, provided that damage doesn't kill you or knock you out, you are Stunned. When you get Stunned, you lose 1 Action. For example:
You cannot get Stunned twice in a row. While Stunned, you also can't heal yourself or anyone else, or cast any spell, or repair any armor or weapon. If you have any skill, item, or potion that heals HP, it will still work. Basically, you can't actively choose to do anything while Stunned, but stuff that would happen as a result of a Skill, Item, Potion, Weapon/Spell/Armor anyway, still happens. Here, I'll give you an example.
Got all that? I hope so Private, because we're done with HP for now. We won't get back to it until Week Four, so you've got some time to let all this sink in. Now, it's time to learn about Honor and Glory.
Honor and Glory
Both Honor and Glory are types of experience points. When you add them together, the total number is Renown. Some level ups, like Attributes, can be bought with Renown. Others have to be purchased with Glory or Honor only. Every Action you perform gets you 1 Honor, no matter what that Action is- even if you surrender, are Stunned, or are bleeding out. Newer players will end up earning mostly Honor.
Glory isn't the same as Honor, and is harder to get. To earn Glory, you have to do something really slick. Getting into a fight alone will get you 1 Glory. The cooler your moves, the more Glory you get. Here's a few sample posts:
It's a good thing for Billy's sake that he doesn't exist, because if he did, I'd tear him a new one for being so lame! That 'post' earned him 1 Glory.
Better, but not great. That's 2 Glory right there.
All right, now we're getting somewhere! 6 Glory!
Get the idea now?
Just don't get carried away. Just like in SoE, there's no God-modding or auto-hitting. You can post what your Gladiator does, but it's the random dice rolls that determine if it works or not.
there's one other way to get Glory, and that's with a Finishing Move. If you reduce an opponent to near death (-9 for NPC's and player-characters, 1 for monsters), you get to perform a Finishing Move. The SoE staff will decide, without telling a member, if they want his foe to live or die: the ol' thumbs-up, thumbs-down thing from Roman times. If you post with the right response, you get an additional +15 Glory and +10 Honor- that's on top of any Glory you'd earn for how slick your move was. Example, you ask? For you Private, why the hell not!
Finishing Moves against Legends will earn you +100 Glory if you choose correctly. A Finishing Move against a Hunter-Killer Boss earns you +1000 Glory and +1500 Honor if you choose correctly. Keep in mind that Legends are very difficult to kill, and will often require teaming up with other Gladiators to fight...and Hunter-Killer Bosses will always require you to team up with other Gladiators, and will probably kill a few of them.
You can get as crazy as you want with a Finishing Move. Wild moves get you more Glory, so if your Finishing Move was so awesome it got you +5 Glory and you guessed right, you'd get another +10 Glory, for a whopping +15 Glory! Add to that any Glory earned from earlier in the fight, and you can see how much it is in your best interest to get as wild and creative as you want. In addition, winning a fight automatically gives you +5 Honor, getting the chance for a Finishing Move gets you another +5, and guessing correctly gets you another +10. So in our example fight, Billy got:
That right there is +45 Renown! Not bad for one fight, huh? Now keep in mind that some weapons, armor, spells, potions, and prizes can increase the Honor or Glory you get from a fight, and if you have a lot of Wealth left after buying all yer junk, you get an additional +1 Glory after every fight you win for every 1 Wealth you have. So if Billy had 100 wealth, he'd get ANOTHER +100 Glory, on top of all that up there! The idea is that the less money you spend on armor and weapons, the more guts it takes to fight, since all you got on is the clothes on your back. People love seeing that, so if you're lucky enough to live through it, you deserve a little something extra.
In addition, you can earn Karma through your actions. Karma, as we covered in Character Creation, allows you to reroll any roll in the combat system, provided you specify it beforehand. Additionally, some skills can be paid for using Karma. Karma does not have a lower limit...if you have 1 Karma and purchase a skill that requires 10 Karma, you will then have -9 Karma. Remember though, negative Karma means the admin/mod in charge chooses which rolls of yours to redo. If Karma is awarded, it is at the admin/mod's sole discretion. You can earn bad Karma too, if you are particularly nasty in a post. Just keep that in mind.
You did good this week, Private. Get some chow from the Mess Hall and report back here at 0600 tomorrow. I'd eat up if I were you, things only get harder from here on out. DISMISSED!

Billy has 5 Stamina, and gets hit for 8 damage. Since the damage he took is more than his Stamina, he is Stunned. This Stun makes him lose 1 Action.
You cannot get Stunned twice in a row. While Stunned, you also can't heal yourself or anyone else, or cast any spell, or repair any armor or weapon. Billy is wearing a Ring of Joyness, which heals 1 HP every time Billy posts, up to his maximum HP (in this case, 8). So even though Billy couldn't choose to do anything, the healing would have happened anyway, so it still does.
Got all that? I hope so Private, because we're done with HP for now. We won't get back to it until Week Four, so you've got some time to let all this sink in. Now, it's time to learn about Honor and Glory.

Billy looked at the newcomer. "Let's fight!" he said, and swung his sword.
It's a good thing for Billy's sake that he doesn't exist, because if he did, I'd tear him a new one for being so lame! That 'post' earned him 1 Glory.
Billy narrowed his eyes at the stranger. "I don't believe we've met. You should consider yourself lucky."
In a lightning move, he unsheathed his sword and sliced at his enemy's leg.

Better, but not great. That's 2 Glory right there.
With a cry that echoed from the pit of his stomach and carried the voice of all his nightmares with it, Billy dove at the mysterious masked man with the gleam of a madman in his eye. His sword sliced through the air with the whining shriek of metal moving too fast for the eye to see, his mouth foaming like a rabid beast.
All right, now we're getting somewhere! 6 Glory!

Billy has been fighting Cutie-Pie, a mod-controlled sorceress. He has done enough damage to bring her to -9 HP, and thus is entitled to a Finishing Move. Emperor Hare and Senator Veca have decided they'd rather see Cutie-Pie live...but they don't tell Billy that. Billy struts around, yells at its unconscious body, pees on it, but doesn't kill her. He gets +4 Glory for the taunts, and +10 Glory, +10 Honor for doing as the Staff had wanted. If he had, instead, killed Cutie-Pie, he wouldn't get the +10 Glory or the +10 Honor.
