 Gates of Claudandus
« Thread Started on Jul 18, 2009, 6:18pm »

The Gates of Claudandus refers to the distortion housed within the Temple of Janus in Failewyn. This distortion alters the flow of magic in unpredictable ways- often at great risk to any mages in the vicinity. In order to prevent the distortion's spread, the Temple of Janus was built around it, and enchanted with a powerful spell derived from the pull of Eshathar's moon. Much like the rising and falling of the tides, the Gates of Claudandus wax and wane, sometimes drawing magic in, sometimes spewing it out.

The outward period is known as Portus Abres, and corresponds to periods of low lunar pull. During Portus Abres- roughly midday and midnight- magic cast in the vicinity of the Temple is amplified dramatically, causing even mediocre or novice spells to have much more profound effects. This outflow of magic causes the doors of the Temple to swing open- this serves as a warning to Failewyn's mages to avoid using magic while the Temple doors are open. There have been rumors that entire beings have been thrown forth from the distortion during particularly intense periods of Portus Abres.

The inward period is known as Portus Propinquus, and corresponds to periods of high lunar pull, roughly dawn and dusk. During this period, any magic cast near the temple is dramatically reduced, or even completely negated. This inward pull slams the Temple doors shut. Though these doors are partially effective in insulating those near to the temple from the nullifying effects of the distortion, there is still considerable personal risk in being near the Temple during these periods. Several documented cases exist of unwary mages who were sucked into the Distortion, never to be seen again.

The Temple of Janus itself provides limited protection from the distortion's effects. Due to the enormous stresses places upon the structure, a Watch is posted around it at all times. Recently, the effects of Portus Abres have become much more pronounced, and the magics emitted during these periods are unlike those previously seen in Failewyn.

Scholars have suggested that the Gates of Claudandus are in fact a doorway to other worlds...
